Over the past few weeks, I embarked on a personal challenge to abstain from driving a car and instead explore alternative means of transportation. Throughout this 15-day journey, I primarily relied on my trusty e-bike to commute, run errands, and navigate the city. In total, I covered an impressive 280 miles, discovering a new perspective on transportation, enjoying the fresh air, and immersing myself in the local community. In this blog post, I will share my experiences,

Living in a rural setting presents its own unique set of challenges when undertaking a car-free challenge, as I discovered during my 15-day journey. Situated eight miles away from town, atop a hill with a daunting 1,200 feet of elevation gain in the final three miles, my experience differed from someone living in a city. Despite the hurdles, I embraced the opportunity to explore alternative transportation options and discovered the resilience and adaptability required to navigate rural landscapes.

The first and most apparent challenge was the arduous uphill climb I faced on my e-bike each time I needed to travel home from town. With a significant elevation gain of 1,200 feet in just three miles, it required additional effort and endurance in spite of the e-bike. Since I didn’t want to burn out my bikes motor and battery sag was an issue I still had to pedal quite a bit to make it up the hill. However, as I persevered, I realized that this challenge became an opportunity for physical fitness and personal growth. Each journey up the hill became a test of my determination but it was a small price to pay for the freedom I was afforded. Living further away from town meant that I needed to be more strategic in planning my trips and managing my time effectively. Unlike the convenience of city living, where amenities are within easy reach, I had to consolidate my errands and make the most of each trip. Planning ahead became essential to optimize my time and ensure that I accomplished everything I needed without making unnecessary additional trips. This experience taught me the value of efficiency and resourcefulness in a rural setting.

There were many surprising and rewarding things I learned along the way.

One of the immediate joys I experienced during this challenge was the liberation of being outdoors and soaking in the fresh air. Instead of being cooped up in a car, I relished the sensation of the wind against my face and the ability to take in the sights and sounds of my surroundings. It brought a renewed sense of appreciation for the beauty of nature and the little details that often go unnoticed when driving.

In a rural environment, the infrastructure for alternative transportation, such as bike lanes and dedicated paths, is often limited or non-existent. This lack of infrastructure poses safety concerns and can make it more challenging to navigate the roads, particularly when sharing them with vehicles. Moreover, the absence of safe places to park or lock my bike in town meant I had to be vigilant and creative in finding suitable locations to secure my e-bike. These hurdles highlighted the need for increased investment in rural transportation infrastructure to make alternative modes of transportation more accessible and safer for residents. While my e-bike served as an excellent mode of transportation, I couldn’t help but notice the inadequacy of bike lanes in my city, Yakima as well. Although there were some designated lanes, they were often fragmented or abruptly ended, making it challenging to navigate through traffic safely. This lack of infrastructure poses a significant barrier to encouraging more individuals to choose alternative transportation options. I hope that city planners will prioritize the expansion and improvement of bike lanes to create a more bike-friendly environment. Yakima recently formed an advisory board for sustainability. I’m hoping that maybe they will realize that one way to move in a more sustainable directions is through promoting alternatives to driving.

Bike rack, who needs a bike rack?

""

One of the other challenges I faced during my car-free challenge was the scarcity of secure places to lock my bike. Many destinations, such as shopping centers, offices, and public spaces, lacked proper bike racks or designated areas. This made it difficult to leave my bike unattended, often forcing me to spend extra time searching for a suitable and secure location. Increased investment in bike parking infrastructure would not only encourage more people to cycle but also alleviate concerns about theft or damage.

Fortunately, my city had a well-maintained local greenway, a designated trail for pedestrians and cyclists, that proved immensely useful for traversing town during my car-free challenge. The greenway provided a safe and scenic route, away from traffic congestion, allowing me to enjoy my rides without worrying about navigating busy roads. It served as a reminder of the importance of investing in infrastructure that promotes alternative transportation and fosters a healthier, more sustainable community.

Where to shop?

Of the unexpected outcomes of my car-free challenge was a shift in my shopping habits. Without the convenience of hopping into my car and driving across town, I found myself frequenting local businesses more often. From grocery stores to specialty shops, I discovered the charm and convenience of shopping within my neighborhood. Additionally, the farmers market became a go-to destination as I could gather most of my weekly necessities in one location, fostering a stronger connection with local producers and the community. Admittedly I did have to rely on Amazon for a few items because it was easier to have them delivered to me then to go shopping around town for them.

Healthy for the body and the mind.

""

Not only did my car-free challenge benefit the environment and the community, but it also had a positive impact on my personal well-being. Over the course of 15 days, I shed 4 pounds, which I attribute to the increased physical activity from biking. Furthermore, the relaxed pace and immersion in nature allowed me to unwind and de-stress, leading to an overall sense of relaxation and improved mental health. Despite the challenges, the rural landscape offered its own rewards. As I conquered the steep hills and rode through picturesque countryside, I felt a profound connection with nature. The beauty of the rolling hills, the fresh air, and the serene surroundings provided a unique and immersive experience. Moreover, reaching my destination after an uphill battle instilled a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that was unparalleled. The journey itself became a metaphor for resilience, determination, and the rewards that come from pushing beyond one’s comfort zone. My 15-day car-free challenge was a transformative experience that opened my eyes to the possibilities and benefits of alternative transportation. While there were challenges such as inadequate bike lanes and limited secure parking, the positive aspects of embracing an e-bike and exploring my city outweighed the obstacles. From the joy of being outdoors to supporting local businesses and improving my health, the experience was truly enriching. A bonus worth mentioning is I saved the purchase of one tank of gas for my car and was able to charge my bike daily with solar power at home. As we strive towards more sustainable and livable cities, investing in alternative transportation infrastructure is crucial for creating vibrant communities where people can thrive while reducing their environmental footprint.
